The experience of viewing North Atlantic humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), one of the largest animals on Earth, while in the water goes beyond anything I have ever encountered underwater anywhere. On WT’s fourth trip to the Silver Bank, off the coast of the Dominican Republic, we watched the gentle interactions between calves and mothers and saw males competing with one another. Most unforgettable: the sensation of whale song rippling through my bones. There’s truly nothing like being in the water with a humpback singer.
