Walk through the door of the Temple of Edfu, and you travel back in time more than 2,000 years. Located on the west bank of the Nile River between Luxor and Aswan, the temple was built between 237 and 57 BCE. Despite its age, about 90 percent of the building’s rooms, walls, and roof remain in great condition. I’d argue that no other construction in the world from this period remains so well intact.

Throughout the temple, the most celebrated myth in ancient Egypt—the epic story of the falcon-headed god Horus—comes to life. The Lord of the sky, Horus was also represented on earth by the pharaohs. Carved scenes on the temple walls and detailed hieroglyphs show the feasts and festivals held here and illuminate a lost world in which the gods and kings were intertwined.
